You missed a grand party Saturday evening if you didn't make it to Cinco de Mayo (click here to see the photos)... more than 200 Severn parents enjoyed delectable fare and outstanding company surrounded by charming southwestern decor. Many, many thanks to Cinco de Mayo co-chairs Kim Hart
(Ryan ’11) and Elaine Soderlund (CJ ’09 & Jamie ’14) for yet again creating a magical and extraordinary evening.

Varsity Girls' Lacrosse in in the FINALS on Sunday!
Way big high-fives to the Varsity Girls' Lacrosse team who beat #1 seeded McDonogh yesterday 10-9! The team now advances to the IAAM Division A Finals. Cheer on the Lady Admirals as they take on John Carroll at 4 p.m. on Sunday at Loyola College. $5 admission fee. Click 'read more' for directions to the Loyola Field and for today's Baltimore Sun write-up.
Time to Turn in Your Used School Books
With the end of the academic year come exams and used book collection. Used book volunteers will be accepting books in the Teel foyer before and after final exams. Books not on the Severn School's discontinued list will be accepted every day. The ever-popular reward of a free cold soda for each student dropping off books will again be offered, so remind your children to stop by and turn in that book!

For those not familiar with the program, the basics are simple. Used books are sold on a consignment basis. The price of a used book is two-thirds the price of a new book, including Maryland state sales tax, rounded to the nearest dollar. After tax proceeds are split 50/50 between the APA and the student.

Upper School Activities & Service Awards
Many congratulations to the Upper School students recognized at this week's special assembly for their activities and service. Open this PDF file for the transcript of the assembly, which lists each and every award winner. See some photos, too.

The company brought home two 1st place awards in their respective divisions. They were also awarded the Best Overall High School Chorus trophy! Applause to Mrs. Laurie Hays, the Upper School Music Director.
    Severn Sailing Competes
    Against Former College All-Stars
The National Sailing Hall of Fame and the USTRA recently held a demonstration Team Racing event right off the Annapolis sea wall, during the city's Maritime Heritage Celebration weekend. Severn School's team race team was the team invited to compete against former college all-stars in a very short course team racing event made for spectators, and supplied with live commentary from a loud PA system that could be heard all around Ego Alley and downtown. Sailing team coach Tom Sitzmann was the commentator on Saturday and Gavin O'Hare followed up on Sunday on the mike, assisted by sailing legend Gary Jobson! On Sunday, Mr. Sitzmann was able to sail a little with Amanda Salvesen '10 and enjoy the game on the water.

Zmuda Honored for Excellence in Education
Congratulations to Upper School English teacher Richard Zmuda, who was among 5 area teachers selected for an “Excellence in Education” award by the Kiwanis Club of Severna Park “in recognition of outstanding contributions to education, children, family and community.” The citation, announced at a banquet on May 8, cited in part: “He is a wonderful, engaging teacher and is involved in the life of the school – as a teacher, a role model, a volunteer, an advisor and a friend. He supports the students in learning both in and outside the classroom.”

    New School Uniform Vendor
Beginning with the 2007-2008 school year, you may purchase Severn School uniform wear from a vendor new to us, Flynn & O’Hara. While you will still be able to also order from Land’s End, Severn uniform wear will no longer be available from Arthur’s Clothiers.

There will be some changes to the School unfirm requirements beginning with the 2007-2008 school year. Most notably, a new Upper School girls’ skirt has been selected. Wear of the current plaid skirt will still be allowed for this coming year, and then phased out of use. Watch for other uniform changes to be announced soon.
