Model UN 09
Last weekend, 24 members of the Severn Model United Nations (MUN), chaperoned by the Club Advisor Mrs. Tereza Belyna and by Mrs. Harriet Yake, traveled to Washington, DC, to take part in the Washington Area MUN Conference organized by the undergraduates at the George Washington University. Severn students, representing the sovereign states of Israel, Peru and USA participated in a variety of UN committees ranging from larger General Assembly committees on human rights and disarmament to smaller committees simulating meetings of the Organization of American States or the EU Council of Ministers. In addition, several of our delegates
participated in the so-called historical committees, which replicate key moments in modern history such as the French Revolution or the South African cabinet meetings of 1990-94.
While in Washington, DC the group led by the Club President Sarthi Dalal
'10 and Vice-President Rachel Pritzlaff
'09 also enjoyed an opportunity to do some sightseeing. As she does every year, Mrs. Belyna took the students on a midnight tour of the monuments and to see the Tidal Basin in its full cherry-blossom beauty. Some students were further able to visit the Hirshorn Sculpture Gallery and other museums on the Mall, and the joint crisis committee on Afghanistan spent an afternoon talking to the Imam of the Mosque on Massachusetts Avenue. Some of the activities were captured on camera by Mrs. Yake; her photographs can be seen in the Media Gallery
. Overall, the trip was a big success and the Club is already looking forward to returning to GWU next year.
